Handy   Hints   -   Digital   Photography   Page
All you wanted to know about digital photography
It's amazing how far digital photography has come in the last few years. Ever since digital photography came into our lives, taking photos has become so much easier. Not to mention so much more convenient. Today's cameras are small and are very easily put into a pocket to carry around. There is no longer any need to carry rolls of film with you. All you need to do is to see that the batteries in your camera are charged and ready to take that picture. One of the best things that digital photography permits is the fact that once your images are uploaded on your computer, you can send them to as many people as you like. The following links may be of use to people who intend using their camera this summer.

Buying a Digital Camera

The digital photography revolution is in full-swing. With so many types of cameras available at different prices and skill levels, it's never been easier to jump in and start shooting, uploading and sharing. But how can you buy a digital camera if you don't know the terminology or what features are important?

Megapixels

It happens to all of us - the moment when one finds out that more megapixels and better photographs are not always the same thing. Disbelief, at first, gives way to a sort of embarrassing self-questioning : You mean, 15 megapixels aren't three times better than 5 megapixels? This year's model isn't better than last year's? I spent all that money upgrading — for nothing?

Tweak Imperfect Digital Photos With Web Applications

While a big selling point for digital photography is that you can take multiple shots and then discard the duds, you don't always get the chance to do that. Sometimes a single imperfect picture is all you've got, but that doesn't mean your finger has to stray to the Delete key straight away. Here's a handful of our favourite web apps for tweaking photos, offering ways of redeeming those less than perfect snaps without even having to install any software.

Give Your Photos a Vintage Appearance

Frank Lazaro, a member of the Digital Photography School community, has put together a fantastic tutorial on taking your digital photographs and giving them the vintage feel of older photos. He uses Photoshop and the tutorial and steps are geared towards Photoshop users, but none of the steps are extremely specific to using Photoshop. The effects could easily be recreated with a bit of tweaking to the process in another photo editing program like GIMP. If you're in the mood to tinker with some of your photos but aren't interested in being really hands on with the process check out previously reviewed Wanokoto, a web based image editor that helps you create vintage effects.

Photo Editing Tools

Dumpr is web-based, very simple to use, and has a pretty decent library of effects: sketch, Lomo, reflection and jigsaw puzzle, to name a few. You can upload photos from your own hard drive, or paste in URLs from some of the major photo hosting services, including Flickr and MySpace.

A.viary is a hardcore photo editing app, kind of like Photoshop without the price tag and disk install. But it’s way cooler than that. It’s a whole lot of really interesting editing abilities and a whole community of people doing their own thing with the tools that makes this one a great choice. Note: it’s still in an invite-only beta period.

Picnik is a lightweight photo editing tool that gets me through pretty much all of my needs right now. I use it about twice a day, and have found that it does most everything I need from a photo editor. It’s not really good with batch-based activities, but if you’re into editing things one at a time, this is for you.

Skitch acts as a screen capture and annotation tool. It’s super easy to use, has just enough tools to be useful but not so many that you feel bloated and misunderstood. I use it to do lots of odd jobs on capture screens and little images from web pages. Definitely good to have.

Picasa 3 has now come out of the beta stage and is ready to go. Lifehacker has a screenshot tour of the updated program.
