Manage Your Cables
Cables suck. But it’s not your fault. You spend an hour or so arranging your desk, moving your monitor, setting up your speakers — the last thing on your mind is cable management. When it comes time to plug everything in, you just want to fire up your rig and commence fragging, or movie watching, or minesweeping. You don’t want to get arm-deep in the mucky muck you’ve created behind your computer. What you can’t see won’t hurt you, right?

Wrong. Given time, sloppy cable management always rears its ugly head. It never improves by itself, and, in fact, it gets worse with each new device you wire into your rig. But you don’t have to get crazy to get clutter free and connected.

We’ve broken cable management into four easy steps.

Declutter Your Desk
Is the area behind your desk an enormous mess of cables, power supplies, external drives, routers, etc?

Here's a clever solution.

CableCoil is suitable for use with a vast array of appliances including TV's, videos, DVD players, PC's, Hi-Fi's, personal stereos, mobile phone chargers, hair dryers, food blenders - as long as the relevant cable is 5mm or less in diameter.

image Label Your Cables
Here's a tip if you are not familiar with all the cables [see the Cables Guide for a list] that hang of the back of your computer - label both ends of every cable connected to your system. It will save you a headache, and if you ever disconnect your system for any reason you won't have to worry when reconnecting it because all the cables will let you know where they need to go. All you need is a Post-it. Everywhere a data or power cable plugs into a component, record on a Post-it which component the cable plugs into. Wrap it around the cable beside the connector, taping to secure. This system may also be used inside the computer if you are new to upgrading hardware. You may also use cloth first-aid tape or takt a look here to see what the readers of Lifehacker suggest.

And to finish off....
Did we miss something? : Probably. Use this as a guide only for your own needs. We hope this gives a good starting point .........?????

Back in simpler times, it was an easy task to hook up your PC system. You just had a few peripherals like a keyboard, mouse, printer and modem to connect, and a corresponding number of cables. Now the landscape has changed drastically, with a proliferation of exciting new wireless, video and audio enhancements, along with the cables and connectors to go with them. We now have to deal with USB, FireWire, network jacks and an assortment of audio and video connections. Complicating the picture is the fact that many of the audio and video connections look identical, but serve different functions. The once simple job of connecting cables has turned into a major headache! Not to worry - we have created this handy little guide to clear your head of all the cable clutter.
