Computer Security

October is Cyber Security (Un)Awareness Month
October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, and it seems many people are in need of some serious awareness-raising on this front. A recent survey indicates that while more than 80 percent of computer users thought they had firewall software installed, follow-up inspections found that only half of those users actually had the software installed or running on their PCs.

It's important to note that staying safe online isn't a set-it-and-forget-it exercise that can be completely taken care of with software. Avoid clicking on links or attachments that arrive in e-mail you weren't expecting, even if they appear to come from someone you know. Also, take care with the software that you agree to install, and remember the golden rule of thumb' "If you didn't go looking for it, don't install it".

Fake Security Products
There are plenty of free security products available, but since there are also plenty of malicious software titles now masquerading as legitimate, diligence is needed. Registry Cleaner found the same 43 "critical" errors on every PC that it was installed on, while consumers who purchased the product were told their machines were instantly rid of the imaginary threats. Very popular is the ploy of displaying pop ups indicating you may be infected with a virus. You are then encouraged to download a virus remover, which, in fact, instals malware onto your computer.

The sole purpose of all these scam websites [and fraudulent emails] is to access your financial details.
If you conduct any financial transactions online [banking -shopping - billpaying] you must be very diligent.

$4 billion dollars lost by Australians to personal fraud
More than $4 billion is stolen from Australians each year as poor protection of personal details has let identity fraud flourish, says new research. Crime Stoppers, the Australian Taxation Office, security experts Fellowes and credit check specialists Veda Advantage are launching National ID Fraud Awareness week, from October 13-17. National Identity Fraud Awareness Week is Australia"s only nationwide awareness campaign designed to help you protect yourself and your business from identity fraud, one of Australia"s fastest growing crimes.

Do we need computer competence tests?
Indignation is the immediate response if you suggest to any computer user that they should be given a licence to use their PC only if they pass a test. Why is this? Every time some kid clicks on a phishing link and invokes a Trojan program, or some greedy idiot agrees to send their bank details to a bunch of crooks in Israel or Russia in the hope of getting hold of illegal cash, their computer gets compromised, and joins the army of "bots" which mean that legitimate businesses are fleeced of terrifying amounts of money by organised criminals.

Take a few computer competence tests
Of course, you may think that you are smart enough to avoid all these dangers.
Then, why not try these tests -

Most of you have some level of protection in place. DO NOT ASSUME that because you have downloaded and installed these programmes they are always up to date. THEY ARE NOT - UPDATE THEM NOW !!!
Regular updating of ALL your software is critical.
