Dangerous Toys
A Queensland toddler is being treated in hospital for suspected poisoning from a toy which contains a chemical that turns
into a substance similar to the illegal drug GHB when swallowed. Most states have banned the craft toy Bindeez, which won
the Australian Toy of the Year award earlier this year.
The ABC reports
that authorities in New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia, South Australia, the ACT and Queensland banned the toy
today after two children in NSW became gravely ill after swallowing a large number of the product's plastic beads.
The company Moose Enterprises has issued a voluntary recall of all its Bindeez products after the children became
ill after swallowing the brightly coloured craft beads.
ALSO,
in August toy-maker Fisher-Price recalled 83 types of Chinese-made toys - including
the popular Big Bird, Elmo, Dora and Diego characters - because their paint contains excessive amounts of lead.
All affected toys are marked Fisher-Price, and carry a date code between 109-7LF and 187-7LF
